of all patients with CMC OA
are indicated for surgical intervention
Symptomatic patients with painful osteoarthritis of the first CMC joint who have failed conservative treatment (splints, injections).
Patients with Eaton stage II–III, occasionally IV SEE BELLOW
Patients who seek to preserve thumb mobility and function, especially younger and more active individuals.
Eaton stage I CMC osteoarthritis represents the earliest phase with minimal radiographic changes, slight joint space narrowing, and no subchondral sclerosis or osteophyte formation.
Conservative treatment is indicated (orthosis, NSAIDs, corticosteroid injections).

Indications for arthroplasty:
❌ Not indicated. Patients are monitored for disease progression and potential surgical treatment at later stages.
Eaton stage II CMC osteoarthritis is characterized by mild to moderate degenerative changes, minor joint space narrowing, and osteophytes smaller than 2 mm.
Conservative therapy remains first-line, though minimally invasive procedures may be considered in symptomatic cases.

Indications for arthroplasty:
⚠️ Considered for symptomatic patients not responding to conservative treatment, especially younger and more active individuals seeking to preserve thumb mobility and function.
Eaton stage III CMC osteoarthritis shows significant joint space narrowing, osteophytes larger than 2 mm, and subchondral sclerosis with deformity of the articular surface.
The ELiS implant is indicated for suitable candidates with good bone quality.

Indications for arthroplasty:
✅ Strongly indicated. Artroplasty of the CMC joint is preferred over trapeziectomy in active patients who wish to maintain thumb strength and range of motion.
Eaton stage IV CMC osteoarthritis involves degenerative changes extending to adjacent joints, especially the scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) complex.
Treatment choice depends on the degree of STT involvement and patient age.

Indications for arthroplasty:
⚠️ Selective indication. May be combined with other surgical approaches, such as STT arthrodesis, in carefully chosen patients.
The ELiS implant restores physiological mobility, eliminates pain and discomfort with movement, and allows patients to regain fullfunction and mobility of the thumb while maintaining muscle strength.
Over 12 years of follow-up for single mobility and more than 4 years for the dual mobility version.
Scientifically proven to use one of the highest performing UHMWPE materials available.
A patented composite coating enhances bone ingrowth by 30% compared to convencial coatings.

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon, UK
“The ELiS implant is a fantastic option for CMC arthritis and I wholeheartedly endorse both the implant itself and the family run manufacturer - Beznoska.
The coating of the implants in particular allows for instant fixation and early active movements, reducing rehab time for my patients and increasing my confidence in their outcomes.“

Hospital de Blanes/Institut de la Ma, Spain
“It’s the best TMC prosthesis on the market — it gives me every option I need intraoperatively and adapts perfectly to different patient anatomies. Thanks to its stability and precise instrumentation, surgeries are efficient and predictable. Patients also experience very fast recovery, which makes ELiS my go-to solution for basal thumb arthritis.”

”The ELiS total endoprosthesis is my first choice for treating basal thumb arthritis thanks to its modular design and broad range of cup options, including single or dual mobility and spherical or conical shapes. Its surface coatings support rapid osseointegration, and the revision components remain fully compatible with the primary implant. I confidently recommend ELiS as a reliable and versatile solution.”
